Gangtok Government Hospital introduces wait in lines (1966)

I have always tried my best to be among the first few lines while visiting a doctor in a hospital. But on many occasions, I don’t have any option but to be in a long-standing queue.  It is a very interesting finding I got to read in the old Kanchenjunga magazine dated 1966 of Gangtok Government Hospital about the wait in lines.

Some six decades back there were no wait lines in hospitals as we see these days.  People from far places of Sikkim used to drop at Gangtok Government Hospital at any hour of the time and make haywire for the doctors and the hospital staff.

It was in the month of July-August in the year 1966; a new rule was brought into practice by the Royal Durbar to set up a proper wait in lines for the visiting patients at the hospital for medical check-ups.  It was also made into practice that personal records of the illness of patients should be kept in the hospital itself.  It was also directed to the Hospital authorities that Prince Tenzing and his brother would do regular inspections of the new rule.

The Royal Family of Sikkim always fascinates me, it is these photographs that make me feel closer to my Sikkim. I usually surf around ebay.com an auction site that sometimes gives me a glimpse of my place. my king and my people. 

The above photograph was taken in 1971 when Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal and his Gyalmo arrived in London. The peculiar rarity of this photograph is the way the late Chogyal has grown his beard. Very less photographs are available with the Chogyal having a beard which was prominent in the later years of his life.

Felicitates Shital Pradhan for “Proud to be a Sikkimese”

Dalapchand:  Himali Sangh, a State Level Youth Awardees NGO from Dalapchand held an environment program on June 18 that was attended by more than two dozen members of the organization at its office. Couple of an hour long program had discussions and speeches about Biodiversity Conservation from distinguished guests. Present on the occasion were Narendra Chettri (Chief Guest of the day), Deputy Director ICDS, Prakash Poudyal, Green Teacher of Dalapchand SS, Narad Mani Dawari, former Panchayat and others.

The other highlight of the program was the felicitation of Shital Pradhan, teacher of Dalapchand SS for his popular blog “Proud to be a Sikkimese” about history and news of Sikkim. Narpati Dawari, Secretary of Himali Sangh read the bio data of Shital Pradhan. Narendra Chettri handed over a memento to Pradhan. 

A small rally was also held with people of all age participating in it hold different placards on environment. Tek Nath Poudyal, President of Himali Sangh in his welcome speech informed the gathered Sangh members about the importance of the day. He spoked about the need in relationship between the nature and human beings. Poudyal said that Sangh had been working in State Level programs since its establishment and we should now prepare ourselves for the National Level programs too. Poudyal further said we have to preserve the Mother Nature not for us but for our coming generations.

Poetry contest and placard contest was also held that was won by Jayanti Dawari and Loochan Bhattrai respectively. Prakash Poudyal, Green Teacher of Dalapchand SS was the resource person of the day and he endow with information about the need for preservation of plant life. Poudyal put on attention to the Sangh members, the importance of social fencing. He said planting of sapling won’t make an earth green but it is the thought of social fencing that will create a green earth.

Narendra Chettri said he was very happy to learn about the progress made by Himali Sangh. Cherri added we as a human being should understand our environment and help them sustain. It is their presence that keeps us alive, said Chettri. He appreciated the Forest Department initiation to stop illegal grazing of cattle at forest lands and cutting down of trees. Chettri urged everyone to work together to make a better environment.

Shital Pradhan thanked members of Himali Sangh for the honour and appreciation for his blog, Pradhan said today we are concerned about environment and call for preserving it, similarly documentation of Sikkim History is also necessary for our coming generations. 

Dalapchand SS takes Go Green oath

DALAPCHAND: Dalapchand SS celebrates Sikkim State Green Mission yesterday at school premises. Present on the occasion were ST Bhutia, Headmaster of the school, Prakash Poudyal, Green Teacher of the school, other teaching and non-teaching staffs and students. “Go Green” oath was also taken by the teachers and the students of the school.

The program was hosted by Prakash Poudyal, Green Teacher who informed about the significance of the safeguarding of the plants for healthier tomorrow. Poudyal went on to say that recently he along with Headmaster of the School and a Green Student had attended the World Environment Day celebration at Chintan Bhawan; he said he found it very exciting and an honour to listen to the message of the Chief Minister of Sikkim who always endows prominence to the environment.

Sangam Rai, student of Class IX who had attended the World Environment Day celebration at Chintan Bhawan also spoke on the occasion. Rai said our life is incomplete without plant world and it is our duty to preserve them. If we cut a single tree we should try to plant at least ten saplings, told Rai.

ST Bhutia, Head Master of the school in his speech talked about the Sikkim State Green Mission that had been observing in Sikkim State since 2006.He said the Green Mission was launched by Chief Minister of Sikkim. Bhutia went on to say it was our Chief Minister’s dream to make our state a Green State. Such event was to promote consciousness among students the different activities related to environments

Other people to address the gathering on the occasion were Karma Bhutia (School In charge), Sushma Das Rai (student) while vote of thanks was given by UN Mishra.

Kritika Rai selected for national level Tennis training

13 years old Kritika Rai of Sikkim Table Tennis Association (STTA) has been selected during a selection camp organized by Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) recently at Ajmer. Ms. Rai who has proved her mettle in the game will be awarded the facilities in the academy by PSPB which includes free boarding and schooling apart from free training inclusive of all equipments and sports kit.

Dalapchand SS observes World Environment Day

Dalapchand: World Environment Day was observed at Dalapchand Secondary School with a cleanliness drive and plantation of saplings along the school premises. Present on the occasion was ST Bhutia, Head Master of the school and the staffs. Different types of sapling that included pani saaz, pine, uttis, chilauney and flowering plants were planted on the day. More than hundred students carrying placards with quotes about saving environment also had a short procession.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonam Bhutia, Graduate Teacher told about the importance of conservation of the plants in order to have a better environment. Bhutia said we have to take care of our environment not only for us but also for our coming generations. BB Subba, a senior teacher of the school talking to this reporter said that the students are very nature caring. Since preserving environment is a part of our education, we are concern about making our children understand our mother nature, Subba added.

Samir Pradhan’s “Kina Maya Ma” starring Indian Idol 3 Prashant Tamang and directed by Chunilal Ghimeray under the banner of Channel Ace Production is all set for World Premiere at Kerela Social Centre, Abu Dhabi, UAE on 17^th June and on an alternative day at UAE biggest city Dubai. This will be the first time in Sikkim's history that a feature film from Sikkim shall be released in overseas. 

Suresh K. Lama, a Technical Consultant by profession of Mazhitar, Rangpo is passionate about promoting and marketing Sikkim Nepali movies and artists. It is his effort that “Kinna Maya Ma” is getting its premiere in UAE. “My aim is to promote quality visuals made in Sikkim, promote our local talents and provide them opportunities beyond the state. I just want the world to get a foretaste of our Arts and Culture”, Lama says.  

He further added Channel Ace Production House is a prestigious production house in the state and Mr. Chunilal Ghimeray is contributing towards the field of Art & Culture for a few decades. His approach towards me had given me the confidence to market quality visuals around the world, added Lama.

He further said, he had established the market for “Kinna Maya Ma” in 7 countries of the world including some Indian states. Along these lines, he wishes to establish a regular market for upcoming films of Sikkim in different countries of the world too. The need for theatres in every district and subdivision would showcase the creative talents of the state and those more passionate about acting can make it a career, I am sure it can help reduce the unemployment problem to some extent, he added.

Encouraging more people in the field of production of quality films, short movies, documentaries, music videos, and corporate advertisements through the State Capacity Building Department can establish markets around India and abroad then we don’t have to depend on the market and technicalities of Nepal, says Lama.
